10. We make you qualify - You have to show that you are interested and able to learn the techniques we teach you. We want to teach people who are there to learn.
9. We expect you to take care of your partners - Your ability to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is based on the quality of your training partners. A good partner helps others learn the technique, improve in training and remain healthy. If you can only think about yourself, we really don't want you training here.
8. We give you instruction - It is easier to flail around than to try the technique correctly. Not everyone wants to hear why they made a mistake or what they could do to improve.
7. We don't have the Tiger Claw or nunchucks to hit yourself with - Grappling is not a cool way to show off at parties. It is an efficient and effective martial art that works on people who are fully resisting.
6. We make you sweat - You could have the ability to run 10 miles and still end up doubled over after just a short time on the mat. People don't want to push themselves outside their comfort zone.
5. We teach the fundamentals - Everyone wants to do the cool move they saw on youtube, but we stress a strong foundation. You are going to see techniques multiple times so that you can actually perform the move when it counts. How tedious!
4. We put you in uncomfortable positions - Being pinned under someone who is bigger and stronger than you is intimidating and learning to relax when you are there is difficult. It is a lot easier to just quit when things get tough than to stay sharp, try the technique and escape.
3. We expect you to train and improve - Fitness gyms sign you up and hope that you never show up. It takes time and dedication to improve and eventually the dedicated student will trounce the naturally talented student.
2. We won't sell you a belt - We know that after months of training telling your friend that you are still a white belt can be humbling. Belts are a funny thing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and they are rewarded based on a variety of criteria, which is why people hold them in such high regard.
1. We charge too much - We know the value of expert instruction and a solid training environment. Other schools have you pay for all sorts of extras like belt testing, board breaking, certificates and we don't like bothering you with that. Plus, people have a hard time prioritizing things that are cheap.
